Restructuring Roundtable 100th Anniversary Gala Event

With close to 300 participants in attendance, great speakers and excellent food, the 100th Restructuring Roundtable Gala was a resounding success!    Our cutting edge morning panel of speakers - Paul Joskow of MIT, Bill Hogan of Harvard, Sue Tierney of Analysis Group, Richard Rosen of Tellus Institute, and Rick Sergel of FERC - delivered stimulating and provocative presentations, and responded to thoughtful and probing questions from members of the audience.

Participants enjoyed a delicious lunch before reconvening to hear Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs Ian Bowles deliver the keynote address, Massachusetts’ New Directions in Energy Policy.  Secretary Bowles used the occasion to announce state environmental approval of Cape Wind’s proposed wind energy project in Nantucket Sound.

“This is an exciting time for people who care about energy – people like you and me,” said Secretary Bowles.  “Massachusetts can get in at the ground floor of the clean energy future we all know is coming.  Let’s embrace it and capitalize on it.”

In the afternoon Dr. Jonathan Raab presented Department of Energy Resources Commissioner David O’Connor with an award for his stewardship and service to the Restructuring Roundtable forum over the past decade.  The Commissioner, although thoroughly surprised by the award, nonetheless delivered a gracious and substantive impromptu acceptance speech.  Mary Beth Gentleman, a partner at Foley Hoag, the long time sponsoring host of the Restructuring Roundtable, then presented Dr. Raab with his own award for coordinating and moderating the Roundtable since its inception. Ms. Gentlemen referred in particular to Dr. Raab’s uncanny and prodigious knack for finding just the right combination of presenters at each Roundtable to keep things lively and interesting.

Speakers in the afternoon panel - Gordon van Welie of ISO-New England, Commissioner David O’Connor of DOER, Cheryl LaFleur of National Grid, Jerry Oppenheim of Democracy and Regulation, Bruce McLeish of Constellation NewEnergy, Steve Cowell of CSG, Peter Fuller of Mirant Energy Trading, and Mary Beth Gentleman of Foley Hoag – discussed their visions for the future of electricity restructuring in New England and then opened the floor for the usual high caliber questions from observers.
